Tucked away on a 1.3 acre lot, this house in Los Altos, California was renovated by Bart Prince -- transformed from a rectangular cabin into an eclectic combination of forms, inspired by the owners, Dale and Margo Seymour’s, love of math, art and geometry. The newly built structure is composed of steel and glulam, creating angular forms with generous glazing to create open, day-lit spaces. To navigate the California law that glass cannot be installed in non-vertical positions, an acrylic substitute was used for many of the home’s irregular windows.
Many of the interior spaces are carpeted, including interior walls, serving to dampen sound in the open spaces and make the home feel more welcoming. A spiral staircase stands freely in the middle of the plan, leading to a master bedroom that sits like a nest in a tree, overlooking the rest of the house. To accommodate the eclectic geometry of the home, furniture and decorations are kept simple.
Blending the new remodeling with the former home, shingles adorn the old house in curving patterns, reminiscent of a bird’s wing feathers. The property is also decorated by the sculptures of owner Dale Seymour with mathematically inspired pieces that reflect the passion that went into their home.
