Dürig AG has won a competition to design a new Student Housing building for the University of Lausanne in Switzerland. Dubbed Vortex, the residential building will house 1,350 students and is also a candidate for the Athletes Village for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games. For this reason, the design of the building includes a common path that spirals from the ground floor to the rooftop, creating a distinct social atmosphere that caters to students and athletes.
Walking from the bottom to the top of the ramp will take about 25 minutes, and the ramp culminates in a rooftop terrace with a literary club, fitness center, café, and community gardens. The roof will also feature arrangements of solar panels.
With its ring shape and spiral ramp, Vortex will span 140 meters in an 8,000 meter-square park and sports ground, featuring facilities like a sports hall, nursery, event rooms, and cultural spaces. The central courtyard offers even more social space, and connects to the spiraling ramp.
Vortex is set to break ground in 2017, and be completed by the end of 2019. View images of the project below, and learn more here.
