The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced a major retrospective of the work of celebrated Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with an exhibition to be held at the RIBA's Headquarters in London from February to May 2015. Having shown talent as a draughtsman from a young age, Mackintosh started his architectural apprenticeship at the age of just 16, and the exhibition features over 60 original drawings, watercolours and perspectives spanning his entire career from the late 19th century until his death in 1928.

Though he is known for many works in Glasgow, Mackintosh is undoubtedly best known for the design of the Glasgow School of Art, and in particular for the library he designed for the school in 1909, which was sadly severely damaged in the fire that broke out at the school in May this year. The school takes a pivotal role in the exhibition, with a display of Mackintosh's original designs, as well as a model of the building, photos of the building's details and a film about the design. Other highlights include watercolours of the Daily Record Building and Glasgow Cathedral and a selection of models of built and unbuilt projects.
Though widely celebrated today, Mackintosh struggled during his lifetime to realize his designs, meaning that many of the designs on display were never built. The exhibition will therefore provide a more complete overview of Mackintosh's development as an architect than can be gained from his built works alone, showing clearly the influence of Scottish baronial architecture and some of his collaborative works with his wife Margaret Macdonald, such as the 1901 design for a "House for an Art Lover."
The exhibition by the RIBA was created in collaboration with the Hunterian, University of Glasgow, thanks to the completion of their four-year research project into Mackintosh's work.
