Text description provided by the architects. The new University of Auckland student accommodation campus is located at Carlaw Park, adjacent to the Auckland Domain. The student accommodation campus has direct pedestrian connections to one of Auckland’s most beautiful natural parks. With an abundance of generous open space in the Auckland Domain, private open spaces have also been designed between the campus buildings to strengthen the community/student realm for residents.
The proposed Parnell Railway Station behind the campus provides public transportation benefits for the area. The Carlaw Park master plan includes a through site link connecting the CBD to the Railway Station and Parnell Shops – bridging the disconnection from the CBD to Parnell.
The 433-bed development is designed as self catered, naturally ventilated apartment units in configurations of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom options. At the centre of the campus is a common lounge, study, laundry and games facilities building with car parking at basement level.
Textured and monolithic concrete panels provide a highly durable, low maintenance system and the natural material appearance is sympathetic to the surrounding Domain context. The façade elements ensure that each building has a high degree of articulation, creating depth and shadow together with a clear reading of human scale and proportion.
