The top prize in CANactions' 2014 Youth Competition has been awarded to Valentyn Sharovatov of Unika Architecture & Urbanism, for his "Extrasmall Shopping Mall", a design for a miniature shopping center on a tight site on Lviv. CANactions is Ukraine's largest architectural event, running since 2008.
The design by Sharovatov activates a neglected public square, using the draw of cafes and retail to regenerate this small corner of Lviv. More on the design after the break.
Located in a Historic area of the city, 20 minute's walk away from Lviv's central square, the square where the project is located is well designed and receives a lot of pedestrian traffic, but is under-utilized as a public space. The Extrasmall Shopping Mall has a cafe and flower shop on the ground floor, which is glazed on all sides.
The upper floors are enclosed by a perforated screen, and host retail space and a sloped room which can be used for film screenings and public discussions. On the roof level is a terrace and another cafe, providing additional public space to enliven the square.
On the square itself, new surfaces are added with improved seating and lighting.
